Abstract

Previous studies have suggested that repeated checking leads to reduction in meta-memory. The present study investigated whether self-compassion and emotional change writing effectively prevent reductions in meta-memory. The 80 undergraduate and graduate students who participated in this study were randomly assigned to a self-compassion writing group, emotional change writing group, or general writing group. Participants performed a repeated checking task before and after a writing task in each group, and the changes in their meta-memory, state self-compassion, and positive and negative affect were measured. Significant changes were found in meta-memory in the general writing and self-compassion writing groups, but not in the emotional change writing group. That is, emotional change writing effectively prevented reductions in meta-memory.
